SPECIAL DEAL, 2000
How many roads...?
Video loop, figures: 6,3 and 7,1 in (polyurethane, acrylic
paint), model: 7,1 x 11 in (various materials)
The work series “Special Deal” consits of three
elements: The video “How many roads?” shows a
young couple during their daily routine of domestic work:
They wash the dishes and listen to music while doing that.
They do this sisyphean labor in silence. The video is
looped and the viewer witnesses a continuously repeating
excerpt of every day life.
“Buy one, get second for free:” miniture
portraits of two characters from the video can be
purchased.
There is a special deal on them: “Get your own Phil
and Leonie now!” says the poster advertizing both
figures for $20. A model of their kitchen is an exhibited
as a merchandising product, “The Loveshack”.
Taking a closer look, the protagonists of the video show to
be anti-heros rather than stars. In oposition to the rather
glamourous world of movies and television, the figures are
presented in an unpretentious light: in the video, we see
them doing domestic work and the accompanying action
figures are portraits of disillusioned young people. //
