Pride / Shame is a performance addressing reproductive labor in the context of art making. In several evolving iterations, the actions performed have for example been navigating a space and its limits while rolling on dolly covered with a moving blanket, giving birth to an Amazon Echo speaker wrapped in soiled dish towels, building a sculpture by stacking flower pots, and a conversation with Alexa.

In this series of exercises in my studio, I address the tensions in the entangled realities of maintenance and the individuality of art making – from measuring the space with my body, over thoroughly scrubbing the floor, dancing, reading and drawing exercises to interactions with my peers: feeding somebody with a spoon, holding hands for an extended amount of time.

This is a piece about the death of my mother. It pairs this event with thoughts about my own aging and coming to terms with the ever-shortening span of life one has left, as well as with giving birth and parenting a child with special needs. I read fragmented texts from notecards, switching from short statements about how the work was created, e.g. “This is construction work,” and desires in life, e.g. “I want to live in southern France,” to a narrative about my mother’s passing. At times, I recite text and hold up ever-repeating variations of the questions for the audience “Where are you going?”, “Are you going where you have been?” etc., and drop them to the ground.
